Matching expertise to business needs: insights from The Finance Team’s Grant Robson
The Finance Team focuses on recruiting professionals with broad, versatile experience. Grant Robson, MD of The Finance Team, says their team has good, wide-ranging experience.
“These individuals, along with their qualifications, usually excel no matter the industry because, fundamentally, most industries face similar challenges.”

Common business challenges typically revolve around human resources, inadequate systems and internal control breakdowns. “Whether it’s a financial services firm, a legal office, or certain manufacturing sectors, problems like ineffective personnel, outdated systems and nonexistent or unenforced policies are universal. Addressing these core issues usually resolves 70% to 80% of an organisation’s financial headaches,” Robson explains.
Certain industries require specific expertise
Robson emphasises that certain specialised industries require specific expertise. “We’re cautious about placing general accountants into roles needing highly specialised skills. For instance, a company requiring intricate cost and management accounting will need someone with extensive relevant experience. If we lack an associate with the exact expertise required, we would rather decline the engagement and refer the client elsewhere than compromise on quality,” Robson says.
Robson likens their approach to medicine: “Our associates at FM or CFO levels are akin to general specialist surgeons. But if your business needs a ‘brain surgeon’ level expert, and we don’t have that person readily available, we simply won’t fill the role.” He concludes by noting that while this conservative approach might mean passing on opportunities, it safeguards The Finance Team’s credibility and ensures client satisfaction.
